My goals include helping you understand the legal process and achieving the best possible result for your set of circumstances. I focus on defending against criminal charges, especially reckless driving and DUI defense. I understand the stress of facing a misdemeanor because I was charged with misdemeanor reckless driving after an accident near the Hampton Roads Bridge tunnel. It weighed on my mind until it was dismissed.
To defend you properly, I have trained with the National College for DUI Defense, the DUI Defense Lawyers Association, and the Virginia State Bar Association. I was the only Peninsula Traffic Defense lawyer selected as a 2025 Top Lawyer of Coastal Virginia, I was chosen as one of the 2025 Three Best Rated Newport News DUI Lawyers, and I was selected as a Virginia Super Lawyer.
I wrote the Virginia chapter of the book A Cup of Coffee With 10 of the Top DUI Attorneys in the United States and served as an editor for the first edition of the Thomson Reuters practice manual Virginia DUI Law: Understanding the Scientific, Medical, Technological, and Legal Aspects of a DUI Case, by Tillotson & Martin.
I was raised in Baltimore City, Maryland, where I lived until I began high school. I won my first trial as a high school student when I defended myself against a stop sign violation. I moved to Arlington, Virginia, while completing my B.A. in International Studies at The American University in DC. I also finished minors in Business and French. Subsequently, I relocated to Williamsburg where I earned my law degree at the William & Mary Law School in 1992. After law school, I felt that the Lord might be leading me in a different direction, so I completed a Master of Divinity degree in 2005 with Evangel Theological Seminary.
I enjoy teaching, so I served as an adjunct professor at William & Mary’s law school. I also taught my oldest daughter’s 9th grade class for one semester with our homeschool co-op. Additionally, I am an instructor for the Evangel School of Practical Ministry. I have taught the course in Liberia, Cameroon, and Alexandria, Virginia.
I believe that it is important to use what we know to help other people. I like the quote attributed to Albert Einstein that says, “Those who have the privilege to know have the duty to act.” I have volunteered more than 900 hours with Alliance Defending Freedom by participating in litigation, nonprofit boards, legal clinics, my local bar association, and pro bono legal representation.
My wife and I live in Williamsburg, where we are involved with Living Hope Church. I also enjoy men’s ministry with the Forge, which is affiliated with the Wild at Heart ministry.
